This time its the 79th Highland regiment. Figures are the usual mix of foundry and perry. The officer was a conversion with the top half of a foundry figure and the horse and legs provided I think by a Victrix mounted officer. Flags are GMB. Im struggling with my camera to get any truly decent shots. No chance of an upgrade at the moment.
First photo shows a rather poor picture of my terrain set up in what is my new room in a new house. I now have the luxury of being able to set up about 5 X 8 foot table. Nice. This also shows the Naps collection as it stands. All bases now glued and sanded just awaiting painting and tufting for most of them. Im going to try to finish at least one regiment a day.

Second lot of photos show the first British regiment I have finished basing- this is 88th Foot- the Connaught Rangers. Hurrah! Im not following any particular oob and have arranged units into imaginary brigades. Pictures are a bit dark and I need to sort out the lighting.
After my last post I am posting the results of my experiment to convert the front rank french to 'scruffy' Spanish. In addition to the bicorne wearing figures I also had a go with some with shako. Regardless of the inaccuracies of uniform I think they pass the test of looking 'Spanish'. Only got one reasonable photo the bicornes. With the shakoes I sliced off the french front plate and added a bourbon rosette with green stuff.

Happily sanity and reason has temporarily returned to Fort Biskit and I have put the prospect of a Spanish army to one side for the time being and I have recommenced my painting of my Anglo/Portuguese forces. To complete I need to paint two battalions of Portuguese line, a detachment of Cacadores and two guns.

I am finding the line infantry something of a grind and am not very inspired by Front Ranks figures on this one. They are nice enough but lack some character compared to others- the Cacadores on the other hand are great. To brighten things up I included a converted mounted officer in ym first regiment. Pictures attached. This was the combination of a Portuguese head, front rank body- a british ADC with cloak I believe and a Victrix Horse. A bit of green stuff and away.
I now have 6 battalions of french infantry, skirmishers, a battery of foot artillery and two regiments of cavalry. To face them I have completed 3 regiments of British infantry, skirmishers, a squadron of hussars and battery of horse artillery. Phase one was supposed to be a brigade each plus artillery plus one regiment of cavalry. However I found myself in a groove with the french so just kept going. The Brits were more of a slog- all that red- but very satisfying to see the end result. My little British force is shown below- terrible picture and I will post some better shots of each unit as these are based. Figures are Front Rank, Foundry, Perry and a couple of conversions for the officers.

Have decided now to consider this the end of phase one am now ready to move into phase two. Two things I should now sensibly do.

Firstly, I decided not to base the units as I went along partly because when I started I wasn't sure what rules to use- then I played Black Powder and Im hooked. I decided on my basing scheme but then- apart from one french gun have not based anything yet as I didn't want to break the painting flow.

Alternatively, the original plan involved balancing out the forces with a brigade of Portuguese including a regiment of Front Ranks lovely cavalry. And I was set to do that- but then Front Rank released their reinforcement packs of French infantry. Absolutely brilliant and just what the range has needed for ages. I bought two packs- one with bicornes. I thought I would put them aside until I was ready to paint more french. But looking at them and taking inspiration from Clarence Harrison who has converted Victrix revolutionary French to Spanish infantry I wondered how much conversion it might take to make these French into Spanish.

You can see Clarences fine figures at the link below:

www.quindiastudios.blogspot.co.uk

I have now undertaken literally minutes of research and decided that- provided I am willing to ignore a number of historical inaccuracies (I am) this could work. I don't know what the fascination is with conversions but I get a perverse pleasure in turning figures that are supposed to be one thing into something else. Maybe its because in some way this makes my figures feel unique, or perhaps its just that its fun to mess about with a Stanley knife and green stuff- who knows. Anyway I am going to experiment and see what happens.

I've decided to undertake the following conversion. I have removed the pom pom from the shako and I have given the majority of the figures big Spanish looking (imho) facial hair. Possibly reinforcing national stereotypes- who knows. So pretty simple and the results shown above. In terms of painting I intend to create a scruffy looking unit from the 1810 to 1811 period so before shipments of British arms and uniforms come through in significant amounts. Figures will have a mix of old beaten up white uniform and brown peasant cloth. I'll do six figures mix in Spanish Officers and see what happens. Will post the results when finished.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4616806613387581938.post-25910210742963816902012-05-18T02:33:00.000-07:002012-05-18T02:33:10.267-07:00Been gone too long...Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to post anything for a very long time. So much for my new year resolution to post every month at least. But no matter- I have forgiven myself and I have not been idle on the painting front.

First up I have completed two cohorts for my Roman army. I wanted these to be of the veteran variety and deliberately grubby and battle worn. Cohort One:

With the second cohort wanted to have more of a shield wall look and for them to look as though they have just received a barrage of spears and arrows. Relatively simple conversions which entailed chopping off the arms and re-glueing into the required position. They look anatomically odd close up but look fine based up as a group.
Next up I have completed another Celt war-band- The leader figure is a druid type figure and I cannot remember where he came from. All figures with the exception of the 'druid' are warlord games.

According to my calculations I have now completed 181 foot, 5 Cavalry, 1 civilian and 3 chariots so far this year. Not the most amazing tally but moving in the right direction.

Im off work today so going to do some daytime drinking this afternoon and going to Twickenham tomorrow. Yeeeha!
My first Romans- a small unit of auxiliary archers. And just to keep things balanced a unit of celt archers. More warlord games figures but metal this time. Nice figures- my only complaint is that they had a fair amount of flash to clean up before . On the other hand they paint up really easily and have a perfect period feel.
I've added another war-band to my Celts. These are again Warlord games figures- again a pleasure to paint. I discovered that in my last order from Warlord I had mistakenly ordered two of the Celtic army standard bearer. The leader of this warband is therefore a simple conversion of this figure with the standard replaced by a sword. Again I've sought to arrange the figures in a pattern which gives a sense of movement to the formation. Also pictured blow is my first command figure who is also from warlord games. I cut the head off a Roman casualty figure to add extra gore. Another warband will follow soon.

As I said in my last post I thought I would try painting up some Perry AWI figures to see how compatible they are with Front Rank- especially when based. So here are the results- 6 fusiliers. I really like them but they are very thin when compared to FR and I'm of the view that they are just not compatible. At least now I know for certain. Maybe I will wait and see how inspiring the Black Powder AWI supplement is when this comes out- not for some time I believe. If properly inspired it would be good to re-do my AWI using Perry figures. We shall see.

I am playing an AWI game next month which will have a scenario heavy on narrative. For this I wanted a female figure to play the American mistress of the British CiC. She's been captured by the rebels and may be put on trial for espionage- scandalous! Surely Washington hasn't authorized this! The British elite forces have the task, amongst other things, of rescuing her. She look a bit sulky but can you blame her. AAR will follow in due course. I think this is a Foundry figure- I may be wrong.
Finally, also for the AWI game I did a quick conversion to provide another mounted rifleman- this gives the unit four figures which I will field as a 'small' unit in the scenario. Another Front Rank mash-up. I think this figure gives the right impression of these not being cavalry proper
I did also base up two of the bowmen but have decided to pop these back in the box. Great figures but I am not going to allow myself to start on another project. Figure is based on a 1p piece to give a bit of heft.

As previously stated I am finishing off some missing odds and ends for my AWI collection. Below are some more additions. First up is an American cannon. Nothing much to say on this except that I was pleased with the look of the bronze on this gun.

Second up are some militia skirmishers. About half of these were given white armbands so that they can be fielded as a tiny unit of loyalists if needed. I have no idea if this was a battlefield sign which was actually used but its useful to have such markers in games to avoid confusion. Again a mix of figures- some partially painted some time ago and finished off and the rest newly painted. A couple of the figures had already been glued onto round bases so rather than prize them off I just added sand and foliage. At some point I need to decide that my AWI collection is finished but there always seems to be just one last unit to add. I would love to be able to add in some Perry Regiments but they may look just too different. Somewhere in the back of my mind I keep thinking about adding enough units to be able to refight every battle of the war- with AWI it is a possibility- Im just not sure I want to do this with Front Rank though.
I have a few Perry British infantry which I got from a show. Maybe I'll paint them up and see how they compare. It is surprising what seem like huge differences on the painting table on the games table actually don't seem significant at all.

Anybody else mix these manufacturers in AWI?

My tally of figures completed so far is now
I'm doing my roman invasion of britain project as an exercise in speed painting. These took no time at all and are not my finest work I must admit but based up I think they look pretty effective. These are Warlord hard plastic figures. I wasn't sure whether I liked them as individual models but en-mass they look very dynamic. You really do get the impression of a mob of bloodthirsty warrior rushing to shed some roman blood- nice!
Have tried to make the basing 'dynamic' with a cluster of warriors around the chief and standard and a thinning out of warriors towards the flanks and rear. I think this looks a lot more realistic than neatly ranked warriors and mirrors the way crowds behave. It also has the added benefit of reducing the number you have to paint to get the right effect. Im intending at the moment to have at least 4 such warbands and have most of the second painted.
These are figures intended to plug gaps in my AWI collection. First up are three mounted riflemen which are conversions achieved by chopping foot figs in half and adding to the bottom half of random unwanted cavalry figures. I actually did the conversions some years ago and some of the painting but have only just got around to completing them. These are intended to play a part in an ambush scenario and to give a bit of mobility to the American forces.
Next up we have 6 British Light infantry who I have added to represent Ferguson's rifles when required. When they are not doing that they will add numbers to my light infantry battalion. Finally I painted up this British Legion Cavalryman to be part of an 'imaginary' regiment of State Cavalry for the rebels. I have a bit of a dearth of American cavalry- not sure when I will get round to painting this guy some comrades. In the meantime he can tag along with the dragoons.

All figures are from Front Rank AWI range. These figures do look a bit dated, particularly when compared with the Perry AWI range. However I think they have a lot of character and most are really good figures. As with all FR figures they paint up really well and look pleasingly substantial on the tabletop. Its a shame that FR will probably never add to the range or remodel the worse figures- a few marching continentals in hunting shirts and more British infantry in slouch hats would make a big difference.

Anyway Im going to keep a tally of figures completed this year so:

2012 total= 6 x 28mm infantry and 4 x 28mm Cavalry.

Cheers!

Despite the fact that making something a new years resolution is one way to ensure it doesn't get done I have committed to updating this blog at least twice a month. Will I keep to this?- only time will tell. My other NY resolutions are to get fatter, drink more, become less organized and alienate people- I am just being realistic.

I was appalling at the updates throughout 2011 so the only way is up. I did quite a bit of painting during 2011 including making some serious headway on 28mm Napoleonics as well as re-basing and 'refreshing' my AWI collection. I also played three war-games which is a 200% improvement on 2010. 2011 was also the year when I discovered Black Powder rules and I suspect life will never be the same again.

As far as possible I'm planning to post pictures of minis as they are completed so use this blog as a record of my painting endeavors whatever these may be.

My plans for 2012 painting are currently-

Complete phase one of 28mm Peninsular Naps- this will involve completing a Brigade each of French and Brits with a couple of cavalry regiments and a battery of guns each. Phase two will extend this to division sized forces with more guns and cavalry.

Finish the last few elements of my 28mm AWI collection- these figures look pretty dated now but I still love em.

Paint up some 28mm ECW- I have a number of figures from Bicorne- I'd like to get a dozen or so infantry regiments done initially. Im looking forward to seeing what comes out by way of ECW version of BP.

I have some EIR and Celts from Warlord games of which I have painted a few- I intend to paint up enough to be able to play a decent sized game.

Other plans may include starting to paint 6mm Napoleonic figures with the aim of playing a refight of Waterloo in 2015- Im sure Im not the only one obsessed with the battle and keen to mark the anniversary.

As I haven't actually yet completed any figures in 2012 here are a selection of pics of AWI Brigade Commanders which were either painted up during 2011 or rebased. This was to enable the formation of Brigades for Black Powder games. I made use of some characterful 7YW miniatures from Foundry for some so some uniforms are very very anachronistic (or just plain) wrong. I however couldn't care less- purists, sharpen your pitchforks and light the torches.

Tarleton showing his ruthless side. Front rank figures painted long ago but rebased 2011.
I made this little diorama as a gift for a friend to celebrate the completion of his PhD. Allegedly he had been extremely abstemious in the past months to concentrate on his studies so the scene and little label on the base reflected that. Figures are an assortment of Foundry 18th century range which I had picked up at various points in the past year or so. Platter of food and drink was created with green stuff.

Having concluded that I will never paint enough 28mm Napoleonics to be abel to game on a 'grand' scale I have had an experiment with painting 6mm Adler figures. The figures are brilliant and are so quick to paint. I thought if I could paint up a regiment in one evening then I could look at doing a divisional sized force with a few regiments of cavalry and guns over the course of a couple of months. I have found that acutely I can paint about 100 infantry in a 2 hour session providing I don't worry to much about the detail and am happy with a basic and fairly sloppy paint job - which I am. Have now finished a brigade and 1 regt of Cavalry I am in the process of basing them up. I have found that it is the basing which is taking the time. I also have left metal until the figures are based so still have a bit of work to do on the figures. Overall though it is a real pleasure to be able to paint up figures so quickly and, although these figures will not be winning any prizes for the quality of the paint job en-masse I think they look great. Im thinking of doing Prussians to appose the French and keeping the 28mm figures for Peninsular gaming. I have to say I also was really impressed with the service from Adler who emailed me to check that I was sure I was ordering the right figures as some were post 1812 some pre.

I know I should just stick with the 28mm until thats finished but you know how it is...
Some Pinkerton men and a lady gun slinger. Pinkertons are from Artizan and the female figure from Foundry. I've overdone the foliage but what can I say- I love tufts. Im in the process of putting together several gangs of 5-8 figures each.
Id love to say that I have been so busy painting these that I haven't had time to update the blog but this would be far from true. The truth is that, in addition to real life interrupting progress, I have also been distracted with starting a new project which I intend to be an 'imagi-nations' project involving seven years war Russians- I will write more about this anon.

For the time being I have returned to the creation of my French infantry. Having pondered the question of bases for long enough I've stayed traditional and gone with six bases of six figs although with 50mm frontage these ensure that figures are nice and close. The pic below shows the first three battalions partially complete. I reckon that I have around 30 figures still to paint. So I had better get on with it.

Picture below shows my WIP swiss regiment. It has just occurred to me that I may have painted a regiment which didn't service in the peninsular- namely the 1st Swiss regiment. Im not sure this is a particular tragedy and I am not inclined to re-do them. Will have to check my references again.
I hope to make better progress and have resolved not to paint anything else until these French are complete.
I'm using Black Powder as rules, I'm collecting both sides so don't need to fit in with any one else.

I really want bases to be crowded and have a vignette appeal but still want to be able to represent basic formations; line, square and both march and attack column. I like the visual appeal of formations with officers etc standing behind the line. So after much blue-tacking of figures to various sized bases I'm considering using 60x60 bases with four bases to a unit and 8-10 figures on each. This looks good for the british in line and allows for reasonably convincing square to be formed by turning bases back to back.

Tis style however doesn't look as good for my French as the all important column looks a bit sparse.

If anybody can point me in the direction of successful, dynamic schemes or offer any thoughts I would be immensely grateful.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4616806613387581938.post-52998834239166733542011-01-31T14:26:00.000-08:002011-01-31T14:30:20.579-08:00Big Viking
I had a day off work on Friday so I decided to visit the Wargames Foundry store with the express intention of purchasing some Napoleonic command packs, top up on paints and get a few bases. Things did not turn out that way and I returned with various bargain packs including an Indian elephant, acw figures, lots of ecw and dark ages and a number of other random items which I couldnt resist but none of which have the virtue of fitting in with my ongoing peninsular project.

One of my random acquisitions was a large Viking figure. I've seen this figure before and always thought it would be interesting to paint. I wanted to try a technique which is new to me, by which the undercoat is removed with wire wool to reveal the metal underneath giving a more worn look to armour and weapons.

So in between various social events and a bit of DIY I've spent time over the weekend painting him up. As this is a new technique to me I thought I would show the progress on the figure.

First up the figure has been undercoated black. Once this has dried I've removed parts of the undercoat with wire wool.

This figure is a bit of a personal favourite not because it's a particularly brilliant paint job but because the figure is just so full of character. He's painted more as a generic dark age figure and one day I will paint him some comrades.

I'm really going to work on the lighting etc for my photos- I promise.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4616806613387581938.post-59533645563474013992011-01-22T07:26:00.001-08:002011-01-22T07:35:50.578-08:00DistractionsTalking of distraction i ended up painting this wildwest figure while I should have been painting French naps last week.

I really love the foundry wild west figures and I have painted a few. The intention is to produce a large French infantry brigade (5) battalions plus a battery of foot artillery and some squadrons of cavalry. Opposing them will be a brigade of British, again with some guns and light cavalry. No problem eh!

The trouble is I keep getting distracted, no doubt a familiar story to most of you.

I havn't yet decided on basing yet, hence the blue tack, but will probably be mainly using Black Powder if I ever manage to finish enough figures for a game.

These photos are also early attempts at photography and I apologise for the slightly dodgy quality. I'm hoping to develop my photography as I go and I welcome any advice and tips.

I hope via these postings to chronicle my progress in painting my armies and maybe even playing the occasional game. Overall I'm hoping that posting on this blog will help to keep me focussed on completing projects before I get distracted and start another. Fat chance!

Mainly though I'm really hoping that those who read my postings and look at my pictures will provide me with some feedback to help me develop and learn.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
